Southwest Center for Independent Living

"Working toward a just and barrier-free society" Justin Dart, Jr. Disability Rights Advocate

Founded in 1985, The Southwest Center for Independent Living (SCIL) opened its doors in 1986 as a non-profit civil rights organization. SCIL upholds the same core philosophies that the over 400 Centers for Independent Living in the United States follow. As one of 22 in the state of Missouri, we provide to all individuals with disabilities advocacy, information and referral, peer support and independent living skills.

MISSION STATEMENT:

This mission of the Southwest Center for Independent Living (SCIL) is to promote a barrier-free environment for all individuals with disabilities through public education and advocacy for social change, and to provide a full range of independent living services which will assist each in meeting his or her goals for independence.

Services

Personal Care Services

SCIL Offers two state approved care choices. Consumer Directed Services (CDS) and In-Home Services (IHS) allow individuals with physical disabilities to obtain assistance with personal care and daily living, while maintaining independence in their own homes and communities.

Consumer Directed Services (CDS) gives individuals the freedom of hiring and directing their own care attendants, including family members. CDS services include personal care, toileting, housekeeping, meals and transportation.

In-Home Care Considered the more traditional attendant care program, IHS offers individuals the choice of care through SCIL care attendants, in which SCIL staff trains, insures and supervises.

Program Services

Assisting Customers Through Technology (ACTT) At SCIL, we have an Assistive Technology Demonstration Center, which contains a wide array of devices and pieces of equipment that could allow you to live more easily and independently at home, school or work

Community Education SCIL staff and volunteers speak to community groups and schools about various aspects of disability. This includes disability awareness and sensitivity training.

Renovation and Modification Projects (RAMPS) Many times, your own home may not be accessible to you in a way that enables you to be independent. Entrances or rooms may be inaccessible to you.

Public Policy SCIL advocates on public policy at the federal, state and local levels with a focus to ensure that any policy created will support and protect individuals with disabilities and encourages a more inclusive society for all people.

Support and Recreation Groups SCIL has weekly and monthly recreation opportunities for all ages and disabilities. In addition, special events and trips are available throughout the year.

Youth Services SCIL's Youth Services include transition classes that focus on learning independent living skills, advocacy for educational endeavors such as implementation of IEP's and 504 plans, driver's education, community resource management, social events and much more.
